Conditions that ENTs treat

Your Carmel, IN, pediatric ENT specialists treat a variety of conditions that can affect children, including:

  • Tonsillitis and Adenoid Infections: Your child's tonsils and adenoids serve as filters that catch germs before they can make your child sick. Unfortunately, sometimes the tonsils and adenoids themselves become infected. Unfortunately, the infections become a chronic problem for some children. Enlarged tonsils or adenoids may make breathing or swallowing difficult. Your child may also complain of a sore throat or experience frequent ear infections. Surgery to remove the tissues might be needed if antibiotics aren't helpful.
  • Ear Infections: ENTs also see children who have an outer ear (swimmer's ear) or middle ear infections. Ear infections cause ear pain, fullness, lightheadedness, hearing loss, and fever in some cases. Antibiotics and other medications kill the germs that cause bacterial infections and relieve pain. If middle ear infections have become a chronic problem, your ENT may recommend adding tubes to your child's ears. The tubes improve drainage in the ears and reduce your child's risk of developing infections.
  • Nosebleeds: Occasional nosebleeds happen to nearly every child and aren't usually a sign of a serious problem. If your child's nose won't stop bleeding, or he or she gets frequent nosebleeds, your ENT can diagnose the cause of the bleeding and offer helpful treatments.
  • Snoring: Loud snoring that occurs when your child isn't sick could be a sign of sleep apnea. The condition triggers breathing pauses that deprive your child's brain of oxygen and interfere with sleep. In addition to daytime fatigue, children who have sleep apnea may develop high blood pressure or obesity or struggle at school. Treatments offered by your ENT will prevent the pauses and protect your child's health.
  • Neck Masses: Have you noticed a growth on your child's neck? It's a good idea to schedule a visit with the ENT to determine the cause of the growth and decide if it should be removed.
