What Is Hashimoto Thyroiditis?

How your ENT specialists in Carmel, IN, can help with Hashimoto Thyroiditis

Hashimoto thyroiditis is a complex autoimmune condition which is also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. The condition causes inflammation of the thyroid gland, and is a type of hypothyroidism in which the thyroid produces insufficient thyroid hormone.

Drs. Robert Youkilis, Jeffrey Beach, and Seth Bruggers at Northside ENT in Carmel, IN, offer a wide range of ear, nose, and throat services, including diagnosis and treatment of Hashimoto thyroiditis.

Hashimoto thyroiditis has a familial component, affecting middle-aged women the most. Other risk factors for Hashimoto thyroiditis include:

  • Having another autoimmune disease
  • Genetics and family history of Hashimoto thyroiditis
  • Being pregnant
  • Having an excessive intake of iodine
  • Experiencing radiation exposure

The signs and symptoms of Hashimoto thyroiditis mimic those of other types of hypothyroidism. Common signs and symptoms include:

  • Frequently feeling cold and having difficulty staying warm
  • Chronic fatigue and malaise
  • Pale skin and a puffy face
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Memory problems
  • Muscle pain and cramping
  • Hair loss and skin dryness
  • Chronic constipation and weight gain
  • Depression and a low tolerance for activity

Hashimoto thyroiditis is diagnosed with a blood test, along with a comprehensive medical examination and record of symptoms. The blood test checks for the presence of thyroid peroxidase or TPO antibodies in the blood, which indicate Hashimoto thyroiditis. Thyroid function tests may also be performed.

Treatment of Hashimoto thyroiditis may not be necessary if thyroid function is normal. However, for mild hypothyroidism, a repeat test after 3 to 6 months is needed. For obvious Hashimoto thyroiditis, thyroid hormone replacement therapy may be necessary.

Untreated Hashimoto thyroiditis can lead to serious consequences, including:

  • Goiter
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart problems
  • Depression and mental health issues
