Thyroid

Your thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ that is attached to your trachea and sits below your larynx on the lower part of your neck. The thyroid gland secretes several hormones that are responsible for regulating metabolism and giving your body energy.

Producing too little thyroid, or hypothyroidism, is the most common thyroid disorder and also called Hashimoto's Disease. Depending on how depleted your body is of the hormones, it can result in symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and dry hair and skin, but thyroid medications are helpful for many patients. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid grows and produces too much hormone and causes symptoms like anxiety, fatigue, and muscle weakness.

Parathyroid

The average person has four parathyroid glands that are located on the back of the thyroid. Your parathyroid gland releases parathyroid hormone or PTH, which regulates the levels of calcium in the blood. Hyperparathyroidism can present with similar symptoms to hypothyroidism like fatigue and muscle weakness. Our ENT uses blood tests to help diagnose your hormone imbalance and create a treatment plan unique to your condition.

Thyroid, Parathyroid, and Our ENT

Our ENT can help diagnose thyroid disorders, and thyroid cancers, and develop a treatment plan for any nodules forming on a gland. Nodules are typically not dangerous and can be treated with antithyroid medications. But if they develop into hard cysts and cause discomfort, they may need to be removed with surgery. ENTs are expertly trained in performing delicate throat surgery, including on the thyroid.
